The GMU ASCE is a student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Membership is open to all IT&E students. We meet approximately twice a month, host guest speakers, organize social activities and trips, and promote service activities in the area.

Mission
Classroom knowledge builds the perfect foundation for your career, but ASCE develops your leadership skills, practical tactics, connects you to a network of professionals, and inspires your creative outlets through activities and competitions. Plus, you’ll interact with like-minded peers who could turn out to be your lifelong friends.  Today’s civil engineers are the masterminds driving innovation and shaping our world. You are the profession’s future and have the opportunity to create remarkable projects to improve your community and make a difference in the lives of people every day. Since 1852, ASCE has helped civil engineers find their professional home. As you set your course, and join our more than 144,000 members, ASCE will help you achieve your goals too. ASCE Student Organizations help you master the civil engineering skills you need to enter the profession.

Competitions
Students build, design, and race in concrete canoes at the Annual Virginias Conference.  You can construct a 20-foot-long steel bridge and see how well it stands up to various loads. Other past challenging activities include AutoCAD competitions, mystery design competitions, concrete bowling competition, technical writing and presentation competition, as well as different competitions every year. Virginias Conference ASCE Student Chapter Competitions allow students to use their technical skill in unique projects.

Community Service Projects
You have chosen a career which makes a lasting, positive impact on society. In that spirit, GMU ASCE Student Chapter organizes public service projects where students apply their classroom skills to real life situations.

Field Trips
We offer guided field trips to engineering projects, some of which are still under construction and closed to outsiders. In addition, we visit major projects already in operation like Virginia Megaprojects HOT Lane, and be escorted by practicing engineers who can explain the details of their work.
