(November 2006) BSA statement regarding recent campus events:

Black Student Alliance Statement 11/9/06

We, the executive board of the Black Student Alliance at George Mason University , would like to address our members and fellow students regarding the racially insensitive occurrence that took place recently with a recognized fraternity at Mason. Black Student Alliance will uphold its mission, “to serve as a unified voice for the black students, faculty and staff through which the concerns of the community can be addressed while enriching the cultural, intellectual and social life at George Mason University .”

Here's the background of the situation: a young man was dressed in black face as a “run-away slave” at an off-campus, fraternity sponsored Halloween party. This Young man is a member of a fraternity recognized by the Inter-Fraternity Council also known as the IFC. Photographs were taken and posted on a public website, Facebook, which served as a basis for the Broadside article, published in the Nov. 6 edition. We [BSA] realize that this situation has offended and even outraged our members as well as the broader Mason community. As leaders on campus we have made a uniform decision to take the appropriate steps to address the situation.

We are very much cognizant of the insensitive humor that has taken place and such behavior is accredited to ignorance, cruelty, or the misconception of racism. It is clear that this young man was desensitized to, or was not aware of, the racial injustice that he has committed. Ignorance can only be and WILL only be rectified with education. With that said, the leaders of the Black Student Alliance are committed to promoting diversity awareness on campus through academic and social programs. In the near future Black Student Alliance will organize a meeting with the academic governing body to speak about these current events and a resolution. After this recent event, it is evident that Black history is not being implemented strongly enough into the Mason curriculum. As the second most diverse institution in the nation, the lack of required black history courses does an injustice to the amount of black history that is available. Black Student Alliance is a strong advocate for educating the general public about African-American culture and its history in order for students to make mindful and educated decisions. In conclusion, the leaders of Black Student Alliance want to encourage everyone to continue to further their understanding of the true meaning of racial diversity and encourage everyone to use their college experience as an opportunity to learn about diversity and difference.
