The Chase
Established in 1993, the Occoquan Chase has grown quickly with
more than 250 entries racing in 2001. The Occoquan Reservoir
at Sandy Run Park provides rowers with some of the best racing
conditions in the world. The race begins upriver from Sandy
Run at Jacob's Rock. The 3-mile course follows a gently
winding path past the launch site, finishing at the first set
of overhead powerlines past the grandstand viewing area.
Each athlete/crew that is declared the winner of their division
will be awarded the "Champion of the Chase" shirt, and
they will be positioned first in their event the following year.
The Chase attracts a wide range of competitors,
both in age and in skill level. Novice and World Championship
level athletes will find the course a challenge since there are
no fixed objects (bridges) to navigate by--only buoys. The
2001 "Chase" was another exceptional showcase of good
sportsmanship by the competitors.
The Comfort Inn at Gunston Corner has offered a special
regatta rate of $65.00 (1-4 people). Exit 163 from I-95, ten minutes
from Sandy Run. (703) 643-3100. Please mention the 2002 Occoquan Chase
when registering to recieve the special rate.
Also, please note the new park rules that
