Rowing began at George Mason University in the fall of 1981. The team's best performances include silver at the Dad Vail Regatta in both 1994 and 1996, as well as finishing 5th at IRA National Collegiate Championships in the 4+ in 2000 and 2002. Mason has sent a varsity eight to compete at the Dad Vail every year for the since 1987, save for 2005, when an injury prevented the 8+ from competing (the varsity 4+ that did race placed 5th in the Grand Final).
