Rowing has been a club sport at George Mason University since 1981.  We take pride in our traditions of student leadership and competitive spirit.  Rowing is a year-round sport that depends on strength, endurance and finesse for success.

Rowing Facts:

  • Rowing is the nation's oldest intercollegiate sport--the first race between Harvard & Yale Universities took place in 1852
  • Rowing is one of the original events of the modern Olympics
  • As they produce energy, rowers consume almost twice as much oxygen as ordinary people
  • An 8-man racing shell is ~55 feet long and ~24 inches wide

"MARATHON RUNNERS TALK ABOUT HITTING "THE WALL" AT THE TWENTY-THIRD MILE OF THE RACE.   WHAT ROWERS CONFRONT ISN'T A WALL; IT'S A HOLE--AN ABYSS OF PAIN, WHICH OPENS UP IN THE SECOND MINUTE OF THE RACE."

-- JOHN SEABROOK  "FEEL NO PAIN"

It is not a sport for everyone, certainly not the faint of heart.  But for those who make the decision to participate and who have the will to persevere, collegiate rowing can be the experience of a life time. Lucier_Keough.jpg (9731 bytes)

"Give rowing a try.  I did as a college junior and have been enjoying the challenge ever since."

-- GMU Head Coach Bob Spousta
