The Environmental Action Group campaigns for the protection of the environment and its inhabitants through action and education. We define the environment to include the physical, social, economic, and cultural conditions where we live. We seek to create a diverse movement within the Mason community to make tangible improvements in our environment and empower students to take action for a healthy planet for our future.
Since the fall of 2006, we work to spread awareness of environmental issues and engage the community in initiatives of environmental action. We organized a campus wide recycle bin painting event to increase awareness about recycling in 2007 and 2008. In the fall of 2008, we proposed the popular Patriot Green Fund Proposal that lead to a $100,000/year sustainability fund established in 2011. Starting in the fall of 2008, we have been active in the struggle against mountaintop removal through visits to Appalachia, lobby trips to Capitol Hill, events on campus, and more. Over the years we have helped organize the annual Earth Week celebration at Mason. The EAG is the proud recipient of the GMU Innovative Program of the Year Award for hosted Virginia Powershift 2009, a youth environmental conference for students across the commonwealth. We also advocate for sustainable dining resulting in compostable food containers and all vegan restaurant on campus, Everlasting Life Café.
Please attend one of our general meetings or contact Anartia Gamboa at anartia.gamboa@gmail.com if you are interested in joining the group.
