Dialogue
FIND has also expanded greatly since its founding in 1992, currently connecting over 90 colleges and universities. Moreover, FIND has continued to hold annual dialogues and conferences that have been especially successful in addressing issues pertaining to identity. These past conferences and dialogues have invested a great deal of energy on exposing, exploring, and educating ourselves, but are we ready to take things to the next level by investing in the community? How can we as young Filipino Americans take a proactive role in relation to pertinent issues to bring about social justice and positive change?
Turkeybowl
Turkeybowl has been a long standing tradition honorably held by George Mason's FCA. Schools from the area compete in friendly games of playground football in hopes of winning the coveted Turkeybowl Trophy. Traditionally teams are comprised from other Filipino Organizations from the University of Maryland College Park and Baltimore, DC schools (such as George Washington, American University, Georgetown, and Catholic University), and of course, George Mason University. Play is not limited to just the men though. Girls also take it to the gridiron.
As one of the first and biggest D6 socials of the year, Turkeybowl gives students the opportunity to meet other D6 members from other schools. Not only do students bond with other schools but it also gives them a chance to bond with members of their own Filipino organization through teamwork on the football field and having fun at the same time. Turkeybowl is traditionally held around Thanksgiving (hence the name Turkeybowl). Teams begin practicing months before in hopes of gaining bragging rights until the next Turkeybowl. Despite being competitive, Turkeybowl is a true bonding experience for both new and old students.
Semi-Formal
Semi-Formal is one of the biggest event that we have in December. The event is usually the first Saturday of December. This is where all the ladies get to wear beautiful dresses and guys get to dress up real NICE and HOT with their suit or even Tuxedo. Semi-Formal is like Homecoming where you get to hang out with your good friends and dance like crazy. The only difference is that the FCA-GMU and other Filipino organizations from Washington DC and Maryland are going to join together and have a big DVI get together dance (Semi-Formal).
We also get to vote for DVI Queen, DVI King and DVI Newbie. (Look under DVI for more Information about DVI). The qualification for DVI Queen are: she needs to be an upperclassmen (junior or senior) and that she has shown leadership at any DVI events. DVI King: same as the Queen except, it should be a male. Then for the Newbie: underclassmen either a male or a female who has shown leadership and participated at most of the DVI events.
Semi-Formal is a lot of fun and it is not just because you get to dress up and look all pretty, but also you will meet a lot of new people. Since this is a DVI event, you will see a lot of people from each Filipino organizations from DC, Northern VA and Maryland. Semi-formal gives each DVI school a chance to represent their school and show off their talents if they wish to perform. They perform in front of the crowd either by singing or dancing. I encourage each and everyone to go. You don't have to show up with a date, you can either go solo or with your friends and it's so much fun if you go in a group and dance crazy all night like you've never dance before.
Auction
Our annual auction is one of FCA's biggest fundraising events. It's practically a "social" and/or "date auction." FCA invites and encourage the D6 family to participate in this event by performing such talents (skits, dance, spoken word, singing) as a group or solo. After each act the spectators bid upon their surprising performance. The good thing about it is that whoever the winner is, gets treated out on a "date" by the perfomer. It's a whole bunch of fun and everyone is invited to spectate.
Culture Night
"For the past two culture nights, I've had the privilege of being director for both of them. And I have to admit, it was very hard and it took more than time, effort, and responsibility out of me, it took dedication and determination. Directing culture night is a challenge, and if you love challenges I highly suggest that you look into directing a culture night. I had so much fun and I would do it over and over again, but I will soon be retiring from gmu and someone will have to step up and take charge. Could this be you? I guess we'll have to wait and see."
~Marivic Cruz
Culture night is the biggest event that FCA has every year. Each year we try to put on something new, with different dialogues and various traditional and modern dances. Our main focus is about our culture and our background and history of our motherland, the Philippines. We incorporate all of the above to make the best out of our culture nights and every year, it gets better and better.
The preparations and planning is not that easy, and it can take long hard months for culture night to be a success. However, with the dedication and efforts by each member of FCA, we manage to pull through with ease. Practices are stressful and intense, but overall they are fun. "Practice makes perfect" and that is true, but perfection doesn't have to play a role in our culture nights because they're perfect in their own little way.
