Seven extraordinary women came together to establish Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. at Binghamton University on March 9, 1995. These seven founders: Elizabeth Choi, Karen Eng, Rei Hirasawa, Hee Cho Moon, Chae Yoo Park, Samantha Somchanhmavong, and Connie Yang united with a single vision of providing women with the chance to use their pride in their heritage to become leaders of society. The sorority was conceived through the notion of an organization that would provide a culturally sound and educationally inspiring grounding for Asian American women. These seven women envisioned themselves laying the cornerstones of what was to become a culturally revolutionary and unprecedented organization. This cultural based sorority was to unite young women of differing heritages and encourage them to make use of their strong voices and thoughts. This sorority is open to women of all nationalities and backgrounds who want to learn about, actively speak for, and represent Pan-Asian culture.
On November 13th, 2004, two strong-willed individuals established a Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc Colony at George Mason University, marking the sorority's 21st school. Yueh Yee Wong and Miemo Ammie Khamvongsa dedicated their time and efforts not only during their intake process, but also for an entire year before as an interest group. They believed that their university, with a booming population of about 30,000, 13% being Asian American, needed a tight-knit organization that promoted cultural awareness, service to their community, and most importantly, a voice for women. As an interest group to bring an organization with such goals, they found that Kappa Phi Lambda held these values as the very essence of what they stood for. The Charters held their ground as they acknowledged the obstacles of bringing the sorority, especially being only a 2 woman team. They truly believed in the values of the sorority's motto: "Sisterhood, Service, and Cultural Diversity", and thus never gave up their vision to establish a culture at their university that would embrace the next strong leaders who believed in the same. They hope to mold and shape their colony into a strong group of young women who believe that possibilities are endless, that their future is paved by their own hands, and that challenges are made to be overcome. These founding mothers gained a sense of accomplishment, growth, and pride in themselves through the hard work they put into the sorority. They understood whole heartedly that they will be laying George Mason University. With that in mind, they made a vow to be the best they could be and to set an example for the future sisters at George Mason. Through their journey into Sisterhood, Yueh Yee and Miemo supported each other through thick and thin. They laughed and cried, they learned and embraced, and most importantly they formed a trust that was undeniably the strongest bond they've ever held with one another. They've carried this bond into sisterhood, and they hold it today as the symbol of what true sisterhood means. With that, they will only support each other more, laughing and crying, learning and embracing, and passing the values they've attained onto the future generations.
