Asalaam Walaikum,

Tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 23, is the Inter-MSA Meet at Virginia Tech. We have planned and arranged a whole bunch of activities. There will be a talent show, a Virginia Tech Style Amazing Race, a workshop with discussion circles etc etc. And just like any other Muslim event, there will be food, and lots of it! We can't wait!

Do you need a place to stay Saturday night? We can do that, too (we have available places for guys and girls); just make sure to contact us (information below).

PLEASE make sure to e-mail pasha@vt.edu if you haven't RSVPd through an MSA officer at your own school. Everyone is welcome to come, and below is important information if you're attending.

Asian Pacific American Coalition Survey

Hello George Mason University MSA students,

My name is Jennifer Lovell, and I am a clinical psychology graduate student at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. I have noticed that much of the research on body image issues is focused on Caucasian/European American women, and there is an unfortunate lack of research in psychology on women of South Asian origin. I personally do not have a South Asian background, but I have spent limited time studying in India and have a great appreciation for its culture and people. One of my faculty committee members, Dr. Meera Komarraju (Link), has agreed to serve as a cultural consultant for this project. In my study I would like to focus on South Asian American women students and address issues such as self-esteem, beliefs and attitudes about attractiveness, and eating behaviors/feelings.

If you identify as a woman of South Asian origin, and are a student in the United States, please participate in this online survey by going to the link below. You have an opportunity to contribute to research that will hopefully aid in understanding more about this important topic. Also, please forward this email to other women who may be interested in participating. This survey should only take 10-20 minutes of your time. Your responses will be kept confidential; however, at the end of the survey you will be given an opportunity include your e-mail address if you would like to receive a summary of the results and/or be entered into a lottery to win one of two $50 prizes! Your participation in this research is voluntary.

If you have any other questions please contact the researcher, Jennifer Lovell (LovellSAsurvey@gmail.com), or her supervising professor, Dr. David DiLalla, Department of Psychology, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (618.453.3529, Life Science II).

Here is the link to the online survey:

Thank you very much for your help!!

Best wishes,
Jennifer
