Summer 2004: A section of NCLC 395, "Conflict Resolution & Mediation Practice" was taught by a UDRP team comprised of the UDRP Director (Kara Schedler), a certified Mediation Trainer (Michael West), and the UDRP Assistant Director (Kaui MacDonald). This was a junior- or senior-level undergraduate course offered through New Century College. This was a practice-oriented, introductory course exploring conflict, conflict resolution theory and mediation practice. The course work focused on the development of practical communication skills in the practice of mediation and connecting the experience to conflict resolution theory through the emphasis on and use of self-reflective tools and role-play opportunities. Students were introduced to the variety of settings in which mediation processes are utilized, as well as the utilization of mediation within the Commonwealth of Virginia. In addition to any credit provided by the University, the course was approved to meet the 20-hour basic education requirements for mediation certification under guidelines promulgated by the Judicial Council of Virginia and the Office of the Executive Secretary, Supreme Court of Virginia. Students who successfully completed the course were provided with documentation for fulfilling the 20-hour basic mediation education requirement.
