JMU MEN, ECU WOMEN WIN CAA SWIMMING & DIVING TITLES

The James Madison University men’s team and the East Carolina University women’s team won the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at the George Mason University Aquatic and Fitness Center.

James Madison continued its domination on the men’s side, winning for the second straight year and the eighth time in the last nine years. The East Carolina women won for the first time since 1997 and for the third time in the last five years. The Dukes men placed first with 602.5 points while Old Dominion was second with 577. The East Carolina women scored 587 points, followed by James Madison with 563.

American University junior Frank Byskov and UNC Wilmington junior Kate Milling were named the Most Outstanding Performers for men and women, respectively. Byskov won the 200-, 500- and 1650-yard freestyle and was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. Milling captured the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and was a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay squad.

CAA top performance and meet records continued to fall for the third straight day. Milling set a new CAA top performance mark in the 100-yard free (51.16) while American University freshman Mark Liscinsky won the 200-yard backstroke (1:48.38) and the AU relay team of Liscinsky, Byskov, Erik Alda and Will Maher set a CAA top performance mark in the 400-yard freestyle (3:00.70).

A pair of George Mason swimmers impressed in the school’s inaugural season. Senior Brendan Crowley set a CAA meet record in the 100-free (44.59) while sophomore Louise Middlemore set a CAA meet mark in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.64). Old Dominion freshman Jamie D’Agostino recorded a CAA meet record in the women’s 1650-free (16:56.12).

American fared well in other individual events on the final day. In addition to Byskov’s title in the 1650-free, AU junior Johan Setterberg won the 200-yard butterfly (1:48.27) and sophomore Junkal Irigoien captured the women’s 200-yard backstroke (2:01.92). George Mason freshman Cameron Charlton won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.41), James Madison sophomore A.C. Cruickshanks won the women’s 200-yard butterfly (2:03.14) and the ECU women took the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:30.22).

Freshman Ashley Kirschner of Old Dominion won the women’s 1-meter dive with 382.75 points while ODU senior Kevin Harrison won the men’s 3-meter event with 527.80 points.

AU head coach Mark Davin was named the men’s Coach of the Year while the women’s Coach of the Year was shared by Gwynn Evans of James Madison and Rick Kobe of East Carolina.


JMU WOMEN AND ODU MEN LEAD GOING INTO FINAL DAY OF CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The women's team from James Madison University and the men's team from Old Dominion University lead after the second day of the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at the George Mason University Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Continuing on a record-setting pace that began yesterday, CAA performance or meet records were broken in five events in the finals while six swimmers posted NCAA provisionally qualifying (B standard) performances.

B-standard marks were recorded by American University juniors Frank Byscov and Will Maher in the 200 freestyle in the meet-record time of 1:38.26 and 1:38.67, respectively. University of North Carolina Wilmington junior Kate Milling provisionally qualified and set a CAA record in the 100 fly with a 55.84-second finish, while East Carolina sophomore Amy Hendrick won the 100 backstroke in the B-standard time of 56.51.

George Mason University crowned its first male and female conference champions in just their first season of swimming and diving. Senior Brendon Crowley won the men's 100 fly in the provisionally qualifying time of 48.69 seconds, while sophomore Louise Middlemore claimed the women's 100 breastroke with a provisionally-qualifying 1:03.57 performance.

CAA records were set by James Madison University sophomore AC Cruickshanks in the women's 400 individual medley (4:24.32); Old Dominion's men's 200 medley relay of senior Greg Cardillo, junior Mike Coley, freshman Matt Morrisette and senior John Sax (1:32.34); and East Carolina's women's 200 medley relay of Hendrick, junior Samantha Perry, sophomore Courtney Foster and freshman Mary Inskeep (1:46.50).

Other individual winners include American senior Erik Alda in the 100 backstroke (50.81), American freshman Mark Liscinsky in the 400 individual medley (3:58.02), UNC Wilmington sophomore Amy Sands in the 200 freestyle (1:51.53) and East Carolina's Josh Lepree in the 100 breaststroke (56.84).

UNC Wilmington's women's 800 freestyle relay of Milling, senior Elaine Stringer, freshman Jamie Pollenz and Sands placed first in 7:36.47. Old Dominion's men's 800 freestyle relay of senior Jimmy Sullivan, Coley, freshman John Wall and sophomore Mark Guisto won in 6:48.35.

The final day of CAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the George Mason University Aquatic and Fitness Center is on Saturday, Feb. 26, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.


JAMES MADISON MEN, WOMEN LEAD IN CAA SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

FAIRFAX, VA, February 24, 2000… Both the men's and women's teams from James Madison lead after a record-setting first day of the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at the George Mason University Aquatic and Fitness Center.

American University's men's 200 freestyle relay of freshman Mark Liscinsky, junior Frank Byscov, senior Erik Alda and junior Will Maher set a CAA and meet record placing first with a time of 1:21.88. American also picked up two individual wins, with Byscov as the top finisher in the 500 freestyle in 4:26.67, and Liscinsky winning the 200 individual medley in 1:50.78. In the morning preliminary heat for the 500 freestyle Byscov set a meet record and provisionally qualified (B Standard) for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships with a 4:25.77 performance.

Old Dominion University's Jamie Dagostino, one of three freshmen to win an individual event tonight, set a meet record with a 4:55.30 win in the women's 500 freestyle. William and Mary freshman Ruth Anne Miller won the women's 200 individual medley in 2:05.34. Junior Rusty Hodgson also picked up a win for the Tribe, placing first in the men's 50 freestyle in 20.59 seconds.

East Carolina's women's 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Mary Inskeep, sophomore Courtney Foster, senior Adrienne Cross and sophomore Amy Hendrick captured the win in 1:37.16.

UNC Wilmington's relay team of freshman Baker Stocks, senior Adrienne Sutton, sophomore Amy Sands and junior Kate Milling won the 400 medley relay in a CAA record time of 3:51.59. On the men's side it was the American's relay team of Alda, Paul Barnett, Johan Setterberg and Maher winning in a CAA record 3:19.98.

Milling was the highest finisher of the night for the UNCW, winning the women's 50 freestyle in a CAA record time of 23.55 seconds.

In preliminary action this morning, George Mason senior Brendan Crowley set a CAA record and provisionally qualified for NCAAs with a 20.31 finish in the men's 50 freestyle. He placed second in the finals in 20.65.

American senior Meredith Blanchett won the women's 3-meter diving with a score of 415.75. ODU senior Kevin Harrison won the men's 1-meter diving with a score of 492.95.

The CAA Swimming and Diving Championships continue at George Mason's Aquatic and Fitness Center on Friday, Feb. 25, with preliminary heats beginning at 10 a.m. Final events will start at 6 p.m.
