George Mason Men's Track Signs Allen Simms

August 9, 2000

Allen Simms has signed a national letter of intent to attend George Mason University, it was announced today by Dalton Ebanks, head men's track & field coach.

Simms, a 2000 graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD, joins the Patriot track & field team as the nation's leading prep triple jumper. Simms' personal best performance of 52 feet, 10½ inches at the Golden West Invitational earlier this year was the nation's top mark in the triple jump by a prep during the 2000 outdoor season. Additionally it was the fourth best jump all-time in the history of the meet and the 11th best jump in high school history.

During his senior season he set seven meet records in the triple and long jumps. Last April he earnedthe most outstanding individual athlete award for a high school performer at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA, after winning the triple jump (51-9) for the second consecutive year. Additionally he continued his dominance in both the triple and long jump in the Maryland State Championships, winning both events as a junior and senior.

Simms trains with the Glenarden Track Club in the summer, and continues a steady schedule of competition. Last summer he represented the United States at the World Youth Games in Poland, and has qualified for this year's team which will compete in Chile. At June's US Junior National Meet in Denton, TX, Simms was second in the triple jump, while earlier this summer he won both the triple and long jumps at the Junior Olympics in Buffalo, NY.

"We're very excited about Allen choosing George Mason," said coach Ebanks. "I think this is the best talent we've brought in since I've been head coach."

Simms will compete in the triple jump, long jump and 4x100 meter relay for the Patriots.
