Extramural Grant Review Funding Program

Purpose: The Office of Research Development offers this program to assist Mason faculty in developing strong proposals for external funding. To increase the probability of receiving an award, we encourage faculty to have senior scholars outside of George Mason University review their proposals.

Amount of Funding: The Office of Research Development will pay a $500 consulting fee for each external review of a major grant proposal being submitted by any George Mason faculty member. Up to two reviewers are permitted per proposal.

Eligibility: Any Mason faculty who intend to submit a proposal through the Office of Sponsored Programs for external funding (e.g. NIH, NSF, DOD, DOE, NASA, DoED, NEH, etc.) may request funding. To be eligible for this program the anticipated proposal should be for funding requests greater than $100,000 per year.

Application Timing: Funding requests may be made any time during the calendar year. It is important to note that the draft of the proposal must be prepared sufficiently prior to the submission deadline to allow time for adequate revision. Approval notification is usually within a week.

Application Process: To apply for funding, contact Ann McGuigan, amcguiga@gmu.edu. Please provide the following information:

        • Principal Investigator name
        • Agency proposal is to be submitted to
        • Submission deadline
        • Anticipated funding request per year and number of years of funding
        • Reviewer(s) name, criteria for selection as a reviewer, and contact information

Funding Process: After notification of approval for reviewer funding, the principal investigator should send the proposal to the reviewer(s). Upon receipt of completed review(s), the principal investigator must notify the Office of Research Development that the review has been completed and provide the name of the reviewer who should receive the consulting fee. Notification for payment should be sent electronically to Jennifer Bazaz, jbazaz@gmu.edu.
