Be the someone who does something. Volunteer to package meals for Haiti.
Mason LEADScholars and L-TEAM are/working in conjunction with /The House, Inc. A Student Leadership Center /(located in Woodbridge, Virginia) to help combat hunger in Haiti by packaging over 100,000 meals for the people of Haiti. After the devastating earthquake in Haiti, a student named Ryan MacDonald visited various offices around campus to get the Mason community on board to help with the ongoing efforts The House, Inc. was currently doing. This is the second year for /Project Wipeout: Fighiting World Hunger. In addition to preparing each meal (over 100,000 meals, each meal will feed 6 people = 600,000 meals), we are trying to raise money to donate to the organization so that they can do this program again in a few months. Donations will be used to help cover the costs of the meals, preparation, shipping, and delivery. The organization is asking that each volunteer provide a $35 donation to help with the efforts. LEAD students are doing kiosks and having tables during the evening homecoming events to help collect donations. If you would be willing to "sponsor" a student by donating $35, we'd greatly appreciate it. If we were able to collect $35 for each student volunteer, the Mason community would be able to donate $3220.00 towards the cause. It costs nearly $20,000 to make a project such as this happen. /
The House, Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit recognized by the IRS, and all donations to The House, Inc. are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. The House, Inc. does not sell, share, or exchange donor lists.
/If you would like to make a donation, please make checks payable to "The House, Inc." for the amount desired. You can bring donations to the LEAD Office (Student Union Building I, Rm 222) anytime before Friday, February 19th. We greatly appreciate any help you may be able to offer. We know that times are tough for many, but any donation will make a difference in lives of so many. United College Ministries suggests that while money is the most important immediate need, health kits are now being requested:. Hygiene and Baby Kits are urgently needed for survivors in Haiti. This is one very concrete and "hands-on" thing that individuals or groups can do. Church World Service has issued an urgent call for Gift of the Heart Kits.
Help for Haiti: Learn What You Can Do
We've received inquiries as to what colleges and universities can do to help in the Haiti relief effort. Currently, and for the foreseeable future, the need is for skilled relief and medical personnel. Rebuilding will require sustained effort, and many opportunities will be available in the future. For now, getting the needed supplies to Haiti is imperative, so continued giving through trusted channels should remain the focus for concerned staff and students.
