WHO CAN PLAY INTRAMURAL SPORTS?

Any student, staff, or faculty member from George Mason University (GMU) can play. There are specific rules about former varsity and professional athletes participation.

a. Men are restricted to the open or men’s leagues and events;

b. Women can participate in the open or women’s events;

c. Both men and women can enjoy the co-recreational events.

HOW DO I REGISTER A TEAM FOR INTRAMURAL SPORTS?

  1. Pick-up a Team Roster form from the Rec Sports Office located in the Aquatic and Fitness Center ,         or you may print a copy of the roster form online. Please do not hand-write your rosters.  If we cannot read it, we will not accept it.
  2. Complete the Team Roster form with all player and captain's information. Incomplete rosters will not be accepted. Verify the eligibility status of your team members. Only current George Mason students and faculty/staff with a valid GCard are eligible to participate in Rec Sports.
  3. Once your roster has been completed, bring your George Mason ID and the completed roster to the Rec Sports Office during open registration. Open registration dates are posted online and on the Aquatic and Fitness center bulletin board. Scheduling will be done using an instant scheduling format which will allow those who have completed all necessary paperwork priority when choosing playing dates/times.
  4. When you arrive at the office our staff will help you choose from available playing time and dates. No rosters will be accepted before or after the registration period. Dates and times are subject to change.
  5. Be sure to pick-up a copy of the current rules for your sport/activity.
  6. Make plans to attend the mandatory Captain's Meeting. Dates and times of all meetings will be posted on the Aquatic Center bulletin board and online at: http://recsports.gmu.edu/intramural .

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INTRAMURAL AND CLUB SPORTS?

Intramural Sports are recreational or sporting contests played between members of the GMU community.

Club Sports are competitive non-varsity sports played against teams from other universities, colleges or organizations. Men’s rugby, football, trap and skeet, crew, and lacrosse, as well as women’s field hockey, are club sports at GMU. To view individual Club & Varsity Sports web pages click here. back to top

HOW DO I FIND OUT ABOUT UP-COMING EVENTS OR ACTIVITIES?

Fliers are posted around campus, advertisements are placed in the Broadside, notifications appear on electronic message boards, and the Rec Sports information line (993-GMU1) is updated frequently, as is the Rec Sports website. back to top

CAN EQUIPMENT BE CHECKED OUT?

Yes, there is a limited amount of equipment for check out. Volleyball supplies, softball bats and bases, tennis racquets, and golf clubs are available. A small rental fee may be charged. Click here to go to the equipment check out form. back to top

WHAT IF MY TEAM DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH PLAYERS TO START A GAME?

Game time is forfeit time! All teams not having the minimum number of players to start a game will be assessed a $25 forfeit fee. This fee must be paid before your next scheduled game. If you know you will not have enough players, you may call atleast 24 hours in advance to your scheduled game and the forfeit fee will be waived, but you will still receive a loss. Toe forfeits will result in removal from the league.back to top

I AM A CURRENT GMU STUDENT/FACULTY MEMBER, BUT I HAVE LOST MY UNIVERSITY ID CARD, CAN I STILL PARTICIPATE?

All George Mason students/faculty are required to have a valid GMU ID card at check-in for each game. If you have lost your ID, you must get a replacement before you will be permitted to play. NO EXCEPTIONS! Click here to go to the University Photo ID web page. back to top


HOW DO I FIND OUT IF MY GAME/EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER?

Call the Rec Sports Office at 703-993-GMU1. Here you will be able to speak with a member of our staff or reach our voicemail 24 hrs a day. Our voicemail is updated daily by 6PM with all cancellations or postponements. back to top
