The
Bachelor of Arts degree requirements include the demonstration
of intermediate proficiency in a foreign language. Students can
satisfy this requirement through any of the following options:
| • |
by
completing a capstone intermediate level course (202, 209, or 210) |
| • |
by
obtaining a satisfactory score on an approved proficiency
test offered through the Modern and Classical Languages department
(703-993-1220) |
| • |
by earning appropriate test scores on the TOEFL exam: (1) For the
computer-based version, (a) a score of 230 or above with (b) a 4.5 or
higher on the TOEFL exam is required. (2) For the Internet-based iBT
TOEFL, (a) a total score of 88 or higher is required with (b) minimum
scores in each of the scored sections as follows: Listening - 17;
Reading - 18; Speaking - 22; Writing - 21. Documentation of the test
scores should be brought to our office in Enterprise Hall, Suite 316 for
review. |
| • |
by
supplying substantive, third-party documentation (typically
transcripts) to the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office
that they have completed four or more years of study in a
foreign educational institution in which the primary language
of instruction was other than English
|
The CHSS and COS degree
requirements also include a mandatory three credit hours of coursework
in non-Western culture beyond the university requirement of three
hours in Global Understanding (for six total credits). As with
foreign language waiver, students who can supply documentation
that they have attended a native school in a non-Western country
for four or more years may request a waiver of the CHSS or COS requirement.
We do not review requests to waive the university’s three-credit
Global Understanding requirement.
Please
note: No credit is awarded for a waiver, and a waiver
does not exempt the student from completing the necessary 120
credit hours of coursework; rather, students who receive a waiver
may choose other courses to complete the total minimum credit
requirement.
