Re-Enrollment

Re-admission and re-enrollment are two separate procedures with separate policies. For more information concerning criteria for each of these procedures, please consult the "Admission" section in the most recent George Mason University Catalog (available online). Students in good academic standing who have missed two or more consecutive semesters of enrollment (excluding summer) at Mason may re-enter by completing a Re-Enrollment form available through the Registrar's Office. Students who (a) were on suspension or (b) had a cumulative GPA less than 2.00 at Mason when they left the university must also seek approval for re-enrollment through the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office. Important: All requests for re-enrollment must be submitted by the student to our office at least 2 weeks prior to the first day of classes (as listed in the Schedule of Classes) in which the student seeks re-enrollment. In order to request re-enrollment the student must submit an Undergraduate Application for Re-Enrollment and a Re-Enrollment Request Form to the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office for review.

Re-enrollment is not automatic or guaranteed, and decisions are made on a case-by-case basis with regard to the best interests of the student and college. Students seeking re-enrollment should explain what challenges hindered their academic progress at Mason previously and what specific changes they have made during their absence to help ensure their chances of academic success if permitted to return. In addition to reviewing the student's appeal, the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office will consider other factors including - but not limited to - the following.

  • The students cumulative GPA and chance for improving it in a timely manner
  • Total attempted and earned hours at George Mason and elsewhere
  • Possible academic actions (warning, probation, suspension, and dismissal) the student could incur without substantial academic improvement
  • Hours left to complete remaining requirements for graduation
  • Possibility of repeating classes to improve GPA
