Public Health Announcement
There has been a multi-state mumps outbreak affecting mainly college age students. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and American College Health Association (ACHA) believe that it is critically important to decrease the risk of mumps among students by ensuring that students are properly vaccinated against the mumps. George Mason Student Health Services will follow the recommendations of CDC and ACHA and implement the following measures immediately:
It is imperative that students have documentation that they have received
two (2) doses of MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) or other acceptable
evidence of immunity to them.
Acceptable presumptive evidence of immunity to MMR includes one of the
following:
- documentation of adequate vaccination
- laboratory evidence of immunity
- birth before 1957
The MMR vaccine is available through the walk-in immunization clinic held every Monday 9 - 11:30 a.m. and Wednesday 1 - 3 p.m. in Student Health Services located in Student Union Building 1, room 214.
You may visit the CDC website for further information regarding the Mumps and how it is transmitted. You may also contact the Immunization Office at immunize@gmu.edu or (703) 993-2836.
Each semester Student Health Service sends incoming students an Immunization Record outlining the requirements for immunizations. Compliance with and completion of this form is a Commonwealth of Virginia and University requirement for all students. Students will not be allowed to register for a second semester without full compliance.
Students are strongly encouraged to meet these requirements at home and return the completed form as soon as possible and no later than the first day of classes.
Immunizations can be obtained through local health departments in Virginia
or through private health care providers. Students may also obtain all needed immunizations through Student Health Services. Immunization clinics are offered at the Fairfax campus on Mondays from 9:00 - 11:30 AM and Wednesdays from 1:00- 3:30 PM. Vaccines are available at Arlington.
Minimal fees are charged for all vaccines given.
Note: If you were born before 1957, completion of the immunization form is NOT required. No further action is needed.
