International Students
All J-1 visa students are required under Federal mandate to have health insurance in order to attend classes in Virginia.
George Mason University requires F-1 visa status students to have
health insurance. Therefore, the university will automatically enroll F-1
and J-1 visa students into an affordable health plan. The premium appears
as a charge on the tuition account.
If the student has his/her own health insurance and wishes to be exempted from the GMU Student Health Insurance Plan, the following conditions must be met:
SUMMER 2008:
A. Health Insurance provides at least $50,000 per year in coverage;
B. The deductible does not exceed $500;
C. The policy is valid until August 15, 2008;
D. The costs of medical evacuation ($10,000) and repatriation ($7,500) are
included in the policy.
Written proof (in English) must be submitted along with the completed application form. Your Policy has to be valid until Aug. 15, 2008; plans renewable on a monthy basis will not be accepted.
Please note application due date: Applications for
exemptions must be approved by the tuition payment due date in order to avoid a late fee assessed by Student Accounts. If you do not
pay the insurance premium by the due date, you may be
charged for a late payment fee up to $250.
Please submit all documents to the insurance office located in SUB 1, Room 219A, or fax it to 703-993-3955. It is the student’s responsibility to submit full documentation. Incomplete applications will not be processed. You must have insurance coverage when applying for an exemption from the GMU plan. Applications for insurance will not be accepted.

Please apply for your waiver early, minimum two (2) weeks before the payment due date if you want to be certain that your application will be approved on time.
