Services

Allergy Clinic

Student Health Services provides an Allergy Clinic twice a week for students who are receiving allergy injections as prescribed by their allergist. Allergy shots are given on a walk-in basis at the Fairfax Campus on the following days:

Tuesday 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Allergy shots may be administered at the Arlington Campus. Please call for an appointment.

HIV Antibody Testing

Student Health Services offers confidential HIV antibody testing. This includes pre- and post test counseling. A small fee is charged. Students must return for an office visit in order to receive the results of the test. The results cannot be given over the phone.

Fairfax County Health Department offers confidential and anonymous HIV testing at no charge. For more information call 703 246-7100.

Emergency Contraception

Student Health Services provides Emergency Contraception. No appointment is necessary. In order to get ECPs, a student must meet with a health care provider.

Immunization Clinic
  • Designed to facilitate compliance with the Commonwealth of Virginia's immunization requirements.
  • Clinics are offered on a walk-in basis on Mondays from 9:00-11:30 am and Wednesdays from 1:00-3:30 pm. Please contact us for cost of immunizations.
Laboratory Services

Laboratory services are performed on site by a licensed medical technologist. Tests that are not performed in our lab are sent out to a reference lab. Lab services may be ordered by one of our healthcare providers or by the student’s private physician. A fee is charged for tests that are performed in our lab and payment is due when services are rendered. Students will receive a separate bill from the reference lab when tests are performed by them. This will be discussed with you at the time of your visit.

Medical Records

Your medical record is strictly confidential. To request a copy, please give 24-48 hours notice. You will be asked to show proper identification and to sign a release form. A nominal fee may be charged.

Mental Health

Evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and referrals provided by Student Health Services. We work closely with the Counseling Center. Click here to view the GMU Counseling Center website.

Nutrition

Basic nutrition and meal planning can be discussed with our providers during an office visit. Individuals and groups can schedule an appointment to meet with a Registered Dietician for more extensive information on nutrition and meal planning by calling 993-3283.

Pharmacy

Student Health Services has a limited pharmacy for the convenience of its students. The pharmacy is limited to dispensing prescriptions written by a Student Health Services health care provider. Medications dispensed include antibiotics, medications for colds and upper respiratory infections, and birth control pills. Payment is expected at time of service.

Podiatry Clinic

Student is seen in the Podiatry Clinic by a licensed Podiatrist. The clinic is held monthly at Student Health Services. There is no fee to be evaluated in this clinic and a referral is not necessary. Students are seen by appointment.

Pregnancy Testing and Counseling

Pregnancy tests can be performed in our lab for a nominal fee. Our health care providers are available to discuss options, resources, and services available. For more information on unplanned pregnancy, please visit the following link:

Primary Care

All currently enrolled students are eligible to receive confidential primary care services. Services include diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury, screening exams, as well as health and wellness counseling. We utilize a holistic approach to healthcare and our services are tailored to the unique needs of each individual. In addition, we provide referrals to health care providers and specialists in the community as needed.

Appointments are required, but walk-in hours are available for acute illness or injury.

Sexually Transmitted Infections

We provide confidential counseling on prevention and risk reduction as well as screening, diagnosis and treatment for sexually transmitted infections for a nominal fee.

National STD Hotline (800) 227 - 8922 has trained health professionals available to answer your questions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All calls are private, personal and confidential.

Smoking Cessation

Whether you are exploring this site for the first time or you are attempting to quit smoking for the 10th time, we welcome this chance to support your efforts to quit the tobacco habit! Please visit the following link for more information on smoking cessation.

Travel Clinic

This service helps to prepare travelers for a safe trip by providing travel safety tips, as well as prescriptions and immunizations needed for disease prevention. It is available to students, faculty and staff by appointment only. Appointments should be made approximately four to six weeks prior to departure, especially if traveling to a developing country. A nominal fee is charged for Travel Clinic visits, additional fees are charged for immunizations. Please bring trip itinerary, list of medications you are currently taking, and your immunization records with you to the appointment.

Women's Health Clinic

Student Health Services on the Fairfax campus offers routine annual women’s health examinations which include a breast and pelvic exam and a Pap test. Other services offered include screening and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, contraception counseling including abstinence support education, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing and counseling, evaluation and treatment of menstrual irregularities and other problems and concerns related to women’s health.

There has been a significant Change in Prescriptions for Oral Contraceptives

Student Health Services offers the HPV(Human Papillomavirus) Vaccine as well.

Please note: Failure to keep a Women’s Health Clinic appointment or to cancel at least 24 hours prior to your appointment may result in a $10 fee that must be paid prior to your next appointment in Student Health.

For students having their first gynecological exam, viewing the Women's Health Education Video prior to their appointment is required. Students who have never had a Pap test/pelvic exam or who have never used birth control or who are interested in switching birth control methods will also need to view the Women's Health Education Video prior to their appointment.

The Women's Health Education Video covers what to expect during the pelvic exam and Pap test, a discussion of the various methods of birth control, and screening for and protection from HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
