Friends Don't Let Friends Drink 'til They Drop

STOP ALCOHOL POISONING: this is a condition in which the blood alcohol level rises so high the persons oxygen circulation is halted--death can result from this condition. Therefore never leave some one alone in this state!

**There is no way to sober up quickly. It takes time for the liver to metabolize alcohol in the bloodstream. Cold showers, coffee, food, oxygen and exercise have no positive effect: in fact you could further endanger the person. A general rule is that it takes as many hours to sober up as the number of drinks consumed.

Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning

  1. The person is unconscious, semiconscious, or cannot be awakened.
  2. The person is cold, clammy, pale or blueish skin.
  3. The person's breathing is slow, less than eight times per minute, or the the person stops breathing for ten seconds or more.
  4. The person is vomiting while passed out, and not waking up after vomiting. Never induce vomiting in a semi-conscious /conscious person!

Please take immediate action, don't think they can sleep it off!

  1. Call someone who can help, or call 911 and/or Poison Control (202-625-3333) immediately! Don't be afraid or embarrassed!
  2. Do not leave the person alone. Turn the victim on his/her side to prevent choking in case of vomiting.
  3. Always be "better safe than sorry" if you are not sure what to do. How can your friend be angry about you caring for him or her!
