Confidential Services: Assessment
Substance Abuse Programs & Services strives to maintain an atmosphere in which all individuals feel comfortable discussing concerns related to alcohol and drug use. When you utilize any of our services, our goal is to convey the respect and value with which we regard our clients.
Students may be referred to the office for an alcohol and drug abuse assessment by a variety of sources on the GMU campus that include, but are not limited to: the Dean of Students, Academic Deans, Student Housing officials, student organizations, and Student Health Services. Students are encouraged to seek our services if they would like information or if they develop concerns about their own substance abuse or that of a friend, roommate, or teammate. We also welcome referrals from parents, family members, friends, or significant others.
An Assessment involves a single session interview of one or two hours' duration. Each situation is assessed in a manner that ensures students' right to privacy. All services are confidential. Students whose results indicate substance abuse problems may be referred to the University Counseling Center, an outpatient counseling or treatment facility, support groups, or other University programs and services. If inpatient treatment is necessary, the program coordinator will work with the student's academic advisor to arrange for a medical withdrawal from the University.
Substance Abuse Services is located in SUB I, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For further information and/or to schedule an appointment, call 703-993-3687.
