Confidential Services: Education and Training

GMU Substance Abuse Programs & Services distributes informational materials and provides educational programming in an effort to increase knowledge of factual information regarding alcohol and other drugs, and to change alcohol and other drug related behavior. Educational services are one component of a comprehensive strategy that aims initially to change the campus environment and eventually change the entire campus community. At GMU, our educational services include: facilitating the infusion of substance abuse information into all areas of coursework, providing ongoing educational programs for students, faculty, staff, and administrators while maintaining a substance abuse information resource room.

Traditionally, the prevention community has utilized one-time, event-focused speakers to address the campus' educational needs concerning alcohol and drugs. Research has shown that these programs did not result in long-term effects on students' alcohol related behaviors or other drug related behaviors. At GMU, these programs serve only to complement the comprehensive program. Topic-focused, awareness-raising events also provide a valuable opportunity for various campus departments to work collaboratively and convey a consistent message regarding alcohol and other drug related behaviors.

If you are interested in serving as a Peer Educator, please check out the requirements posted on this site, and download and submit the application. If you have further questions, please call the office (703-993-3687) or include your questions in an email to the Coordinator of Substance Abuse Prevention & Services.

If you are in need of informational materials for a class project, research paper, or presentation; a variety of factual information is available for student use and check-out in the Health and Wellness Resource Center in SUB I. Informational materials include, but are not limited to: historical documents, factual brochures, books, activity books, journal articles, and handouts. Please bring your GMU Student ID if you plan to check out materials.
