Confidential Services: Intervention

George Mason University Substance Abuse Programs & Services provides assistance conducting formal and informal interventions when an individual continues to use alcohol and/or drugs in spite of negative consequences that he or she has experienced due to substance abuse. Informal interventions involve a personal discussion with the individual, whereas formal interventions are structured and involve bringing a group of people together with the substance abuser to explore how the abuse has affected all of their lives. Formal interventions should be conducted by a trained professional and used when the individual cannot recognize the need for assistance and the impact that substance abuse has had on those around that individual.

It is difficult for most people to admit that they have a serious substance abuse problem, even when evidence is piling up around them. It can be especially hard for young people to admit because many of them don't think they can be addicted. Denying that there is a problem often results in the addict becoming distant from family and friends in an effort to hide the substance abuse problem.

You can help even if the individual you are concerned about does not admit to having a problem. If you decide to speak to a friend or loved one, or if you believe a formal intervention is necessary, there are guidelines that you should follow regarding what to say and how to say it. Contact the Coordinator of Substance Abuse Programs & Services at 703-993-3687 to confidentially discuss your concerns. If you or the person that you are concerned for are in immediate physical danger, call 911 immediately.
