STEP 4:
GET READY FOR 'QUIT SMOKING' DAY
-
The
night before your quit date, get rid of all your cigarettes. Be sure
to check your desk, your car, and your purse or book bag - any place
you may have a pack of cigarettes. Get rid of ashtrays, lighters and
matches.
-
Stock
up on substitutes. Try gum, hard candy, raisins, popcorn, carrot or
cinnamon sticks, toothpicks, or sunflower seeds. Put these in the
same places you used to keep your cigarettes. Want some freebies?
Stop by and see us in Health Education Services (703) 993-3690/3686 for
FREE candy or gum and a FREE Quit Kit.
-
Contact
Student Health Services (703) 993-2831 if you want to get nicotine
replacement products and/or Zyban. These products can ease your withdrawal
reactions and help you to succeed in quitting.
Build a "Support
Team"; let your family, friends, schoolmates, and coworkers know
you're quitting. Ask your support team to be on hand to listen and encourage
you when the going gets rough. Ask them to be patient with you if you
are not your usual, wonderful self for a week or two after you quit.
Suggest ways for them to help, like joining you for a run or a walk
and by helping you to find ways to keep busy while telling you THEY
KNOW YOU CAN DO IT! If anybody in your support team has quit, ask them
for tips! If anybody smokes around you, ask him or her not to offer
you any. They don't have to quit themselves to be supportive, but maybe
someone will want to quit with you! You can reach Health Education Services
at (703) 993- 3690/3686.
