Alumni Reception
Alumni outreach activities took place in Korea and Taiwan where Dr. Merten attended dinners hosted by alumni, enabling them to re-connect with the university as well as network with one another.
In Korea, former visiting scholars of the Center for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (CAPEC) hosted a dinner at the Korea Press Club to welcome Dr. Merten on his first evening in Seoul. Seven former scholars from CAPEC and one from the School of Public Policy attended.

On October 28, Dr. Merten attended a reception sponsored by the Alumni Affairs Office and hosted by alumni Tom and Elizabeth Hoban in their home in the U.S. Embassy Housing in Yongsan, Seoul. The reception was organized in part to welcome Dr. Merten and to give alumni an opportunity to network with one another. Approximately 35 people attended, including alumni, students, embassy personnel and educators. It was an energetic and enthusiastic gathering and a unique experience for those affiliated with George Mason University while living in Korea.
In Taipei, Taiwan, Dr. Merten joined a group of alumni on November 4 for a meeting and dinner where they were formally recognized as the Taiwan International Alumni Chapter, the Alumni Association's first international chapter. Fourteen people attended the event. The newly formed chapter is excited to move forward and achieve its goals of unifying George Mason alumni in Taiwan and providing fellowship for personal and professional enhancement. At the same time, chapter members will offer information and mentoring to prospective students and alumni of George Mason University.
