Perhaps one of the most important questions a prospective college student has is where he or she will live. A home away from home is very important, and at Mason a variety of living arrangements are available to fit student needs. All residence halls are all within walking distance of classrooms and university buildings.
There are several different residential community areas on campus:
Presidents Park is the freshman dorm, housing approximately 1,200 first-year students in 12 residence halls. Each floor comprises approximately 28 to 35 residents in double, triple, and quint rooms, and share common bathrooms. Presidents Park is a nonsmoking housing area.
Liberty Square features two- and four- person apartments each with single bedrooms and one bathroom for every two students. It is limited to upper-class and graduate students.
Potomac Heights is a brand news apartment complex accommodating two, four, or six students in single and double bedrooms. Upper-class and graduate students are given preference in this nonsmoking building.
Presidents Park, Liberty Square, and Potomac Heights share the Eisenhower Community Center, which features:
Ike’s Diner
Individual study rooms
A multimedia theater
TV lounge
24-hour service desk
Vending area
University Commons is a nonsmoking area that houses approximately 500 freshman and sophomore students in eight residence halls. Residents live in double and triple rooms. The complex surrounds Hanover Hall, a central commons building that features a study lounge, TV lounge, laundry facilities, and other amenities.
Commonwealth and Dominion are five-story buildings consisting of suite-style, double-occupancy rooms housing sophomore and junior students. The first floor of each building includes a reception area, meeting room, lounge, vending and laundry facilities.
Patriots Village is a unique community for upperclassmen, consisting of suite-style units designed as a double bedroom connected to a single bedroom with a shared full bathroom.
Student Apartments house approximately 500 students in 118 apartments. One-, two-, and three-bedroom units are available for upper-class and graduate students.
University Park Townhouses, located one-eighth of a mile from the Fairfax Campus, consist of 35 two-bedroom townhouses, each accommodating four residents. This housing area includes a living/dining room, full-sized kitchen, washer and dryer, and full furnishings and is most like an independent living situation.
Living and Learning Communities
Living & Learning Communities (LLCs) are residential floors developed by the Office of Housing and Residence Life in conjunction with University academic communities to expand your learning beyond the classroom.
Students who participate in an LLC live on the same floor and attend classes together. These students tend to become more involved in their communities, have more academic successes, and adjust more quickly to the academic and social demands of living at a large university.
LLCs can vary in topic or interest, such as the Mason Experience first-year program, a Cultural Passports floor, or a Healthy Living floor. For more information, check out the Housing and Residence Life web site. (http://housing.gmu.edu/llc/index.asp)
