About the speaker

Dr Arvind Virmani has just been appointed as India's executive director in the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He was previously senior economic advisor in the Department of Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Finance for the Government of India. His primary areas of responsibility wee macroeconomics; economic aspects of taxation and the external and financial sectors; and economic reforms policy. He was the economic advisor for development policy in the Planning Commission from 1987 to 1991, policy planning advisor to the finance minister from 1991 to 1993, and acting chief economic advisor during the first quarter of 2000-2001. Before joining the Government, Dr. Virmani was senior economist in the Research Department of The World Bank, and acting chief of the Public Economics Division. He served as director of the Punjab National Bank and Allhabad Bank, and as trustee of the Unit Trust of India. Dr. Virmani has written widely on various aspects of economic reforms, legal and institutional reform, the social sector, agriculture, real estate, and the media. Dr. Virmani holds a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
