You don't know... History

Imagine hearing a portion of Booker T. Washington’s 1895 Atlanta Compromise speech in his own voice! Or listening to actual man on the street reactions to the declaration of war by the United States after the bombing of Pearl Harbor (in December, 1941)! It’s real engaging. It’s as if you were there! The Center for History and New Media (CHNM) at George Mason, is changing the way people experience the past.

For more than 10 years, CHNM has been “making history”— by combining the most innovative digital technology with the latest and best historical scholarship. From developing History Matters: The U.S. Survey Course, a comprehensive resource for high school and college history teachers on the web to constructing the September 11 Digital Archive, a web-based documentation of e-mails and digital images of the attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia and the public responses to them, CHNM has been changing the way educators, students, and the public experience the past, view the present, and think about the future! Mason’s History and Art History Department offers studies in American, European, and comparative world regions, emphasizing Africa, Latin America, and Asia, and CHNM is only one example of Mason's innovative approach to teaching, research, and scholarship. Contributions to the teaching, understanding, and study of history by members of the Mason faculty are numerous. For example, Robinson Professor Roger Wilkins 2002 book, Jefferson’s Pillow, was awarded the prestigious NAIBA book award, and five members of the History Departmenthave been awarded Guggenheim awards. Other faculty members have received fellowships from a variety of prestigious institutions, including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Getty Museum, and the Social Science Research Council.
