George Mason Board of Visitors approves $300 tuition increase with possible rollback for in-state undergraduate students

Body

The George Mason University Board of Visitors (BOV) on Thursday approved by majority a $300 increase in tuition, and a 3% increase in mandatory student fees, and room and board for the 2023-24 academic year, but will keep in-state undergraduate tuition flat if the Virginia General Assembly approves the university’s funding requests in the forthcoming state budget.

After the General Assembly passes the fiscal year 2024 state budget, Mason will present an amended FY 2024 operating budget for BOV approval.

The proposed tuition increase would fund additional financial aid and other significant support services for Mason students while maintaining an affordable option for student and families in Virginia , said Deb Dickenson, Mason’s executive vice president for finance and administration. About 65% of Mason students receive some form of aid.

The $300 increase, if implemented for in-state undergraduates, would raise tuition to $10,095. With that increase, tuition will be $34,259 for out-of-state undergraduates, $13,726 for in-state graduate students, $35,677 for out-of-state graduate students, $24,136 for in-state law students, and $39,984 for out-of-state law students.

The 3% student fee increase will be $111 for full-time undergraduate and graduate students and $81 for full-time law students. Full-time undergraduate and graduate student fees will now be $3,720 and full-time law student fees will be $2,814.

The 2% housing rate increase ($160) and 4.5% board rate increase ($240) result in a 3% total room and board increase of $400. A freshman traditional double room rate is now $7,970 and the Independence meal plan board rate is $5,550, for total room and board of $13,520, up from $13,120. The 4.5% meal plan increase—up $1.06 per student per day—is below the current Consumer Price Index rate of about 8% for food away from home.
