The MS degree in biomedical sciences is a one-year program offered jointly by George Mason University and Georgetown University, and graduates of the program will receive a diploma bearing the seals of both institutions. All associated courses will be offered at George Mason’s Prince William Campus. The Biomedical Sciences MS degree is intended for students who wish to be accepted into medical school, or who wish to pursue careers in biomedical research.

Students enrolled in the Biomedical Sciences MS program complete 34 credits of coursework, including 19 credits of medical courses, and 15 credits of graduate courses. The medical school courses are taught by faculty of the Georgetown University School of Medicine, and the graduate courses are taught by George Mason College of Science faculty. The program is built on the strength of Georgetown’s medical program, combined with Mason’s expertise in the areas of systems biology, bioinformatics, and personalized medicine.

This program of study is offered by the College of Science .

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the Biomedical Sciences MS program should hold a BA or BS degree in biology, chemistry, physics, or a related field from an accredited university with a minimum GPA of 3.000, and they should have completed all or most of the prerequisite courses for admission to medical school (biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, math). In addition to completing the GMU on-line graduate application package, applicants should include:

  • A statement of desire to pursue a career in medicine, dentistry, biomedical research, or a related field.
  • Official score report for the MCAT, DAT, or GRE-GEN exam.
  • Three letters of recommendation.

  • Current resume.

Students enrolled in the MS program in biomedical sciences may not enroll concurrently in any other graduate degree program or certificate program offered by COS, with the exception of the Advanced Biomedical Sciences Graduate Certificate program. This is because the proposed MS program in biomedical sciences and the graduate certificate program in advanced biomedical sciences both charge students at a differential (premium) tuition rate. Note that students enrolled in academic programs outside COS may enroll concurrently in the proposed program.
