Biography

Beginning her prestigious journalism career by writing for Mason’s campus newspaper, Hala Gorani, BS Economics ’92, has climbed to great heights in the international news world. In 2010, Gorani covered the devastating earthquake in Haiti, contributing to CNN's winning a Golden Nymph award - one of the highest honors in international journalism. She currently headlines her own show, on CNN, “The World Right Now with Hala Gorani.” The show immerses viewers in the latest stories of the day from across CNN's international news operations.

Gorani was born in Seattle, Washington and raised in Paris, France. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from George Mason University and graduated from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris in 1995. She speaks English, French and Arabic.

Gorani delivered the spring 2015 Commencement address at Mason, telling of how she came from abroad to study at Mason — something many members of Mason’s diverse student population can relate to.
