Biography

Justin Plakas is an artist and designer whose work spans photography, video and animation, performance, and sound. His research is currently focused on comedic performance, the body and athletic competition. In addition to his personal studio practice and research, he has worked commercially in film production and photography, advertising, and design. 

Plakas’s multi-disciplinary background is reflected in his collaboration, PLAKOOKEE. In partnership with artist Rachel Debuque, PLAKOOKEE has created work that ranges from socially engaged residency projects to installations, video, and design. 

He has an extensive exhibition record including The National Gallery (DC), Ortega Y Gasset Projects (NYC) and Untitled Fair at Miami Beach. He has screened work at festivals such as Cucalorus and the Chicago Underground Film Festival. Plakas was an artist in residence at The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, The Hub Culture Arts Initiative and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In 2018, He received a Maryland State Individual Artist Award for excellence in Photography. Justin’s work has been featured in been Washington Post, Bat City Review, Garden and Gun, Washington City Paper, Bmore Art, The Stranger and Juxtapoz.
