Case Investigation and Contact Tracing

Mason partners with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and local health departments on contact tracing, and the university assists in locating or gaining cooperation from the university community. 

The university follows VDH guidelines on Contact Tracing as a Partnership (PDF) between VDH and Institutions of Higher Education. 

In addition, the COVID Navigators within Mason’s Safety, Emergency, & Enterprise Risk Management (SEERM) department and Student Health Services review Mason COVID Health Check responses and provide guidance to individuals based on respondents’ vaccination status, exposure, and symptoms. 

This information assists with case management and contact tracing provided by local health departments.

Mason will maintain the privacy and confidentiality of members of the university community and their close contacts. Only authorized university officials involved with the case investigation and the health department will have access to the information.

If a faculty member tests positive, or a student tells a faculty member that they have tested positive for COVID, they should be instructed to report this information in the Mason COVID Health Check.  The COVID Navigator team will notify class members that a positive case has been reported and provide instructions on what they should do.

Mason will work with the Virginia Department of Health and other local health organizations to identify COVID -19 cases among the Mason community and conduct contact tracing.
