Cleaning Protocols

Mason has established best practices and guidelines to keep campus facilities as clean as possible.

The university provides enhanced cleaning and disinfection, in addition to other routine cleaning, following CDC guidance. 

High-contact surfaces in common areas, dining areas, classrooms, residence halls, recreation sport and exercise areas, and other public spaces in campus buildings are cleaned at least daily.

High-contact areas include: 

  • Doorknobs/handles/push-plates. 
  • Restroom fixtures and surfaces. 
  • Drinking fountains/water bottle fill stations. 
  • Handrails. 
  • Vending machines. 
  • Check-out stations. 
  • Payment pads. 
  • Touch-screen information panels. 
  • Other frequent-contact hard surfaces. 
  • Light switches. 
  • Elevator buttons. 


Sanitizing wipe dispensers are in or near every classroom for students to disinfect individual student desks/chairs and for faculty to disinfect the lectern/table/AV controls at the end of every class. High-contact areas include: 

  • Chairs. 
  • Desks. 
  • Lecterns. 
  • Storage cubicles. 
  • Demonstration tables. 
  • AV Control remotes. 

Dining areas 

High-contact areas include: 

  • Digital ordering devices. 
  • Check presenters. 
  • Self-service food and beverage areas. 
  • Countertops. 
  • Chairs. 

Residence Halls 

Occupants are responsible for cleaning individual student bedrooms and in-suite bathrooms and kitchens. Mason will provide cleaning in common areas on such surfaces as:  

  • Appliance handles and controls. 
  • Trash containers. 

Offices and Workstations 

Mason will clean high-contact areas in shared spaces. 

  • Desks. 
  • Keyboards. 
  • Phones. 
  • Pens. 

If you’re the only person who uses your office, you’re responsible for cleaning these surfaces. Your department will get disinfectant supplies for your use. 

Common Areas (Kitchens, Break Rooms) 

High-contact areas include: 

  • Appliance handles and controls. 
  • Countertops. 
  • Trash containers. 
  • Dining tables as necessary, at least once per day. 

Exercise and Athletic Facilities 

  • Exercise equipment, such as game balls or other group sports equipment, should be cleaned by the user(s) after each use. 
  • Game balls or equipment used in intercollegiate competition should be cleaned in accordance with the NCAA sport-specific guidance. 
  • All shared tools, equipment, workspaces, and vehicles are cleaned prior to transfer from one employee to another unless the transfer is from one fully vaccinated employee to another fully vaccinated employee.

Cleaning Following a COVID Case 

When a confirmed COVID case is reported from the on-campus community (including contractors, faculty and staff, or students), Mason Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) will assess the need for work area disinfection based on: 

  • The sick person’s last day on campus. 
  • Their reported date of symptom onset. 
  • The on-campus building and rooms they occupied in the 48 hours prior to symptom onset and while symptomatic. 
  • Activities conducted and time spent in those spaces. 
  • The number and frequency of enhanced cleaning events in those spaces within the last 24 hours they were on campus. 

If additional disinfection is needed, Mason will close and/or restrict access to those areas and disinfect them following CDC guidelines.

  • If it’s been less than 24 hours since the person has been in the space, the area will be closed, and all exposed surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected. 
  • If more than 24 hours have passed, the space will be closed, and all exposed surfaces will be cleaned. 
  • If more than three days have passed, no additional cleaning (beyond routine high-contact cleaning practices) is needed.
