Guidance on Coming to Campus

Mason has a multi-layered approach to fighting COVID-19.

If you think you might be sick, or have been around someone who is, please follow these protocols to reduce risks to the community.

Guidelines for Students, Faculty, and Staff

If you feel sick or have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19

Look for an email from Mason COVID Health Check

  • Follow all instructions.
  • Students: Notify your instructors
  • Staff: Notify your supervisors

Get tested

  • If you have symptoms, testing can be done immediately. Students should contact Student Health Services to arrange a diagnostic test; employees with symptoms should arrange a test through their primary care provider.
  • Do not use Mason’s surveillance test sites if you have symptoms.
  • If you have no symptoms, wait 5 to 7 days from the contact date to get tested
  • Fill out the Mason COVID Health Check survey daily.

If you get a positive result

  • Isolate for 5 days from the test date and/or symptom onset (whichever is longer). Wear a mask whenever you are around others for an additional 5 days (days 6-10 after test date).
  • Faculty should continue to implement course backup strategy as needed, and notify your local academic unit (LAU) head.

If you fill ill, get a negative test and have had no contact with anyone who’s tested positive

  • See a health care provider for diagnosis and follow their guidance.
  • Stay home as long as you feel sick.
  • Only return to campus when you are well and 24-hours or more have passed since your last symptom or fever without the use of medication.
  • Faculty should also continue to implement course backup strategy as needed, and notify your local academic unit (LAU) head.

If you have a negative result but have had contact with someone who’s tested positive.

  • If you are fully vaccinated, get tested 5 days after close contact and wear a mask when around others for 10 days following close contact and monitor for symptoms.
  • If you are unvaccinated, quarantine for 5 days from last date of contact, get tested 5 days after close contact, and wear a mask for an additional 5 days (days 6-10) whenever you are around others.
