Vaccination Requirements

For the safety of our community, Mason strongly encourages vaccines for all students, faculty, and staff.

Mason has adopted University Policy 1416 on COVID-19 vaccinations. The university is holding no-cost vaccination clinics. Schedule an appointment to get your shot

The CDC says you can get a booster five months after your second shot (Pfizer, Moderna) or two months after a single shot (Johnson & Johnson/Janssen).

All students are required to be fully vaccinated by January 5, 2022, unless they received an approved exemption. You should also have uploaded your vaccine documentation to the Health Services Patient Portal by January 5.

The deadline to receive a booster and upload your documentation is February 15, 2022.

Students must meet the requirements in university policy 1416.

All residential students, vaccinated and unvaccinated, must take a pre-arrival COVID test which will be supplied by Mason. If positive, you will not be able to move in until your isolation period is concluded.  All residential students will be required to test again at move-in and also 48 hours after their move-in test. Detailed information for residential students will be sent via email directly to you.

If you're an international student with limited access to COVID vaccines, contact Mason to request a deadline extension. Students with approved extensions must be vaccinated once they arrive in the United States.

Mason offers flexible excused absence options for students receiving vaccination and those with side effects after vaccination. This includes international students whose in-person attendance may be delayed due to CDC international travel quarantine requirements.

Visit the Student Health Services website for information on how to upload your COVID vaccine documentation (all students), or submit your Mason Immunization Record Form (PDF) (newly admitted students).

If you have questions, Student Health Services has set up COVID FAQ  and General Vaccine Requirement FAQ resource pages.  They address such issues as:

Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to receive vaccine and booster shorts when eligible and upload your documentation by February 15, 2022. Understanding our community’s vaccine status is important to Mason’s COVD  response strategy.

All faculty and staff, vaccinated and unvaccinated, who do not have an approved fully remote work agreement are required to test the week of January 17. Note that this requirement applies to faculty and staff who have partial or no remote work agreements.

  • Inform the university of your vaccination status through the Mason COVID Health Check
  • Faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to upload your vaccine documentation into the Health Services Patient Portal. If you’ve gotten at least the first dose, upload your vaccine document. When you get the second dose, upload the completed document.

Missing Documentation

If you’ve lost or damaged your vaccine document, you can request a replacement by emailing the Virginia Immunization Information System  help desk or calling 1-866-375-9795 to request a replacement.  The Help Desk is staffed 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. You can also fill out an Immunization Record Request Form

Need a Vaccination?

  • You can get an appointment at Mason’s Fairfax Campus, often on the same day, through our Vaccine website.
  • If you can’t make it to the Fairfax Campus, the government vaccine website lists locations to receive a shot.
  • Mason employees have an allotted 8 hours of Public Health Emergency Leave to get the vaccine and recover from any side effects.

New Employees

If you are a new employee, you are strongly encouraged to have received at least one COVID-19 vaccination by your start date, and be fully vaccinated within 45 days of your start date, and submit documentary proof through Mason’s Patient Portal.
