Degree Requirements

In addition to satisfying university general education requirements and the requirements for a bachelor of arts degree in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences , students pursuing this degree must complete 43 credits in GOVT.  Students must earn a minimum grade of 2.00 in each course applied to the major. Up to 3 credits of GOVT 480 and 6 credits of GOVT 496 may be substituted for the requirements for the major. Registration in GOVT 480 requires approval of the internship coordinator, and registration in GOVT 496 requires approval of the instructor and chair.

Five core courses (16 credits):

Eight advanced government field courses (24 credits)

Students must take at least one course (3 credits) in each of the four government fields listed below. Up to 3 credits of GOVT 480 and 6 credits 496 may be used in fulfillment of the 24-credit requirement in government field courses with prior written approval of the undergraduate director. GOVT 490 may not be used to fulfill a government field requirement.

Concentrations

Students may choose to concentrate in one of the four advanced government fields listed above by completing five courses (15 credits) in that field. They must still take one course (3 credits) in each of the other three fields and complete a total of 24 credits of field courses. GOVT 490 may not be used to fulfill a requirement for a concentration.

Writing-Intensive Requirement

The university requires all students to complete at least one course designated “writing intensive” in their majors. Students majoring in government and international politics may fulfill this requirement by successfully completing GOVT 490 or GOVT 491 in their major programs.
