Banner Code: HH-MPH-PUBH

Unit: Global and Community Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) emphasizes the core disciplines of public health – epidemiology, biostatistics, health administration and policy, social and behavioral sciences, and environmental health – as well as additional focus on nutrition, global health and other cross-disciplinary topics. In addition to required coursework in each of the core disciplines and a mandatory practical experience, students will pursue a concentration in community health, epidemiology, global health, or health administration. The program is organized to prepare graduates for work in organizations that seek to improve public health at local, national, or global levels. Based upon guidelines set by the Council on Education for Public Health, the curriculum comprises 42 credit hours, distributed among the following categories of courses: Public Health Core (15 credits), additional MPH requirements (9 credits), and a concentration (18 credits). Concentrations will include community health, epidemiology, global health, and public health administration.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the program is competitive, and a variety of criteria are evaluated in the admission process: undergraduate academic performance, recent post-baccalaureate course work, GRE scores, work experience, professional goals, and letters of recommendation. Some background in statistics, biology, and the social sciences is preferred. The application deadlines are March 1 for fall semester and November 1 for spring semester admissions.

Degree Requirements

Students must complete 42 credits of graduate course work. Each course can be used to fulfill only one requirement. A graduate course in which a grade of C or below is earned may be repeated only once. Graduate students may repeat no more than two courses. Students must achieve a 3.00 GPA to graduate.

Public Health Core (15 Credits)

Additional MPH Requirements (9 Credits)

Practicum in Public Health:

▲ Community Health Concentration (COMH): 18 Credits

The community health concentration emphasizes health education and behavior approaches to improving community health. The concentration is designed to help students learn how to address social and behavioral factors affecting the health of communities. Through coursework and opportunities for practical application, students will learn to develop, implement, manage, and evaluate health promotion and disease prevention strategies.

▲ Epidemiology Concentration (EPID): 18 Credits

Epidemiology is the study of the factors that influence the occurrence, distribution, prevention, and control of disease. The epidemiology concentration emphasizes the development of skills such as study design, data collection and management, data analysis and interpretation, and communication of research findings.

Epidemiology Concentration Requirements:

Elective: 3 credits as approved by advisor

All electives must be approved by advisor prior to the start of the course.

▲ Global Health Concentration (GLOH): 18 Credits

The global health concentration is directed toward developing an understanding of health problems that extend across borders. Professionals working in global health need to be familiar with a wide range of health topics, including infectious disease, nutrition, environmental health, social and cultural factors impacting health, and health policy and management. The global health concentration provides opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in these areas through both coursework and practical experiences. Students completing this concentration will be prepared to design, implement, monitor, and manage health programs in international settings.

▲ Public Health Administration Concentration: 18 Credits

The Public Health Administration Concentration provides courses that explain the organization, financing, and delivery of health services and public health systems in the United States and prepare students to apply the principles of program planning, development, budgeting, management, and evaluation to organizational and community initiatives.
