Application Procedure

Students must meet the SOM acceptance requirements in effect at the time of application to degree status in the school.

Acceptance is selective, based on completion of the following as of the 2010-11 academic year: 

1. At least 48 credits, with a minimum of 9 credits at Mason
2. A GPA of 2.50 or higher at the end of the semester of application for acceptance for all courses attempted and from all schools and universities attended
3. A minimum Mason cumulative and semester GPA of 2.00 at the end of the semester of application
4. Successful completion of the following courses with a grade of C or better:

• ACCT 203 - Survey of Accounting Credits: 3
• MATH 108 - Introductory Calculus with Business Applications Credits: 3

• OR

• MATH 113 - Analytic Geometry and Calculus I Credits: 4
• OM 210 - Statistical Analysis for Management Credits: 4
• SOM 301 - Business Models: A Communication Approach Credits: 3

Deadlines for Application to BS Degree Status

Applications should be submitted during the semester in which the student will complete acceptance requirements. 
 

• November 1 for the following spring semester; 
• April 1 for the following summer term; and 
• July 1 for the following fall semester.

Academic Advising

Academic planning for undergraduate students is available in the SOM Office of Academic and Career Services, Enterprise Hall, Room 008. Students are encouraged to consult with an advisor regularly. Any student who wishes to change to a major in SOM must consult a SOM academic advisor for degree requirements. General Education Requirements

SOM students must complete the University General Education  requirements, plus 1 additional credit of natural science (the SOM natural science requirement must be fulfilled by completing two 4-credit laboratory sciences).

SOM General Education

• ECON 103 - Contemporary Microeconomic Principles Credits: 3 with a grade of C or higher.
• ECON 104 - Contemporary Macroeconomic Principles Credits: 3 with a grade of C or higher.

• ECON 103 or 104 satisfies the University General Education social and behavioral science requirement.

• Upper-Level (300-400) ECON  Credits: 3.
• MATH 108 - Introductory Calculus with Business Applications Credits: 3 with a grade of C or higher.

• OR

• MATH 113 - Analytic Geometry and Calculus I Credits: 4 with a grade of C or higher.

• MATH 108 or MATH 113 satisfies the University General Education quantitative reasoning requirement.

• ANTH, PSYC or SOCI Credits: 3.

SOM Core Courses

A grade of C or higher is required in each of the School of Management core courses listed below.  Students will not be permitted to make more than three attempts to achieve a C or higher in the following School of Management core courses: ACCT 301, BULE 302, FNAN 301, MGMT 301, MIS 301, MKTG 301, OM 301 and SOM 301.  Those who do not successfully complete these core courses within three attempts will be terminated from their major and will not be eligible to receive a degree from the School of Management.  For more information about this, see the “Termination from the Major” section under Academic Policies .

• Satisfies the University General Education synthesis requirement.

General Electives

20 credits of general electives are needed to complete the 120 credit hours required for the BU-BS degree. General electives may be selected from any University or SOM course, except courses designated for the Business minor (MSOM).
