Regalia

Please wear regalia if possible. To support faculty participation, the university will pay for regalia rental through the George Mason University Bookstore for any faculty member who will make the commitment to attend and participate.

If you need regalia, please contact the university bookstore immediately in person or call 703-993-2666. To avoid the $25.00 late charge, please respond no later than November 18, 2022. The university is not responsible for this charge.

NOTE: Rental regalia for Winter Graduation will be available for pick up starting early December 2022. Those who order after the deadline should expect a delay in receiving regalia and should call the bookstore before arriving for pick up. The bookstore requires the return of all rental regalia at the conclusion of the Commencement ceremony. You will be responsible for paying the replacement cost if you do not return rental regalia. If you need to make other arrangements, please contact the bookstore. George Mason University follows the guidelines for regalia established by the American Council of Education.

Faculty Advisors

We invite faculty advisors to stand with and hood their doctoral students during Commencement. To participate, please read the following section.

  1. First, please email Jenny Wen at zwen2@gmu.edu to acknowledge that you intend to participate in the ceremony with your doctoral candidate. Be sure to include your name and the name of the candidate. If you do not own regalia, please contact the university bookstore in person or via phone at 703-993-2666 before the November 18 deadline.
  2. Plan to arrive at the EagleBank Arena loading dock entrance no later than 8:30 a.m. You will be directed to the breakfast for doctoral candidates, faculty, and marshals on the Concourse Level, East Side.
  3. The University Marshals will then direct you and your doctoral candidate to proceed to the arena level, near the Hospitality Room, for the doctoral processional lineup.
  4. Advisors will process in and be seated with their doctoral student. At the appropriate time, the marshals will bring you and your student up to the stage. You will first hood your student and then proceed to cross the stage and return to the seating area.

We highly encourage you to watch the following video on how to properly hood a candidate!
