Mason welcomes homeschooled students and students who pursued pre-college educational opportunities that may not be accredited.
If Mason is your first traditional institution of learning, we're so excited you chose us. Many homeschooled students have had successful academic careers as Patriots. We review all applications for admission in a holistic manner, but your application will be stronger if you're able to do the following.
- Indicate a plan to complete all required minimum preparatory course work. Upon entry to Mason, you must have completed all preparatory course work.
- Provide a transcript. We recognize that traditional, official transcripts are not available to homeschooled students. However, we require proof of your academic success based on a curriculum in order to evaluate your eligibility for admission. Your home educator can prepare this document. It should include a list of the courses you completed and the grades you earned. Our guide for preparing transcripts can assist you.
- Provide a thorough curriculum description. We need some details about the type of homeschool program you follow in order to evaluate your level of preparedness for Mason. Since approaches to homeschooling vary, please follow the guidelines that apply to your situation.
- Set curriculum: Provide the curriculum name, years used, and accreditation status.
- Parent-created: Provide a syllabus that includes information taught for each class, benchmarks of success, and measurement of mastery.
- Co-op: Provide the co-op information and syllabus for courses taken. Be sure to supply this information for any course designated Honors or Advanced Placement (AP).
- Dual enrollment: Provide the transcript from the college where classes were completed. Read more information on dual enrollment.
- Submit a letter of recommendation with your Secondary School Report. We'll need a letter of recommendation from someone outside your immediate family who can attest to your academic achievements and abilities. The letter will accompany your Secondary School Report form, which can be completed by your parent or guardian.
- Choose whether to share standardized test scores.
- Score optional: Homeschooled students are eligible to apply under score optional consideration.
- ACT or SAT: Scores must be sent to the Office of Admissions directly from the testing agency.
- CLT: Not currently accepted at Mason.
Honors College Admission for Homeschooled Students
To be a strong candidate, your application should include
- Standardized test scores
- High school transcript
- Letters of recommendation from non-family members
- List of extracurricular activities that demonstrate community engagement outside of academics
- Record of advanced course work, whether AP, IB, or dual enrollment (DE), as evidence of your academic competitiveness
While Mason will not accept the CLT in lieu of the SAT or ACT, if you have taken it and feel it is an indicator of your academic achievement, you may add those scores to your Honors College application.
