According to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2027 released today, George Mason ranks No. 1 in Virginia and among the nation’s top 50 universities for innovation (42nd). The university is also the No. 1 public university in Virginia for upward mobility and earned top 20 national undergraduate rankings in cybersecurity and writing in the disciplines.

George Mason University stands out as Virginia’s No. 1 public university for upward mobility in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2026, as Washington Monthly’s “Best Bang for the Buck” in the commonwealth, and as a top 50 public university nationally according to Forbes magazine.

The Carnegie Foundation and American Council on Education (ACE) announced Thursday that George Mason University was named to the highest tier of its list of Opportunity Colleges and Universities: Higher Access, Higher Earnings, in recognition of the university’s commitment to accessibility, return on investment, and upward mobility. 

George Mason University ranked among the top 5 in Virginia across all 25 categories in the engineering, law, nursing, and policy programs in which it was included in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Program rankings.

The U.S. Department of State has named George Mason University a “Top Producing Institution” of Fulbright U.S. Scholars in 2024-25. The university has more Fulbrights this academic year—eight—than in any year in its history.
